What is BIS Hallmark?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India's national standards body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. BIS hallmarking is a purity certification scheme where gold jewellery is tested at government-recognized assaying and hallmarking centres. Only gold that passes the purity test receives the official hallmark stamp.

This system protects consumers from buying gold that is lower purity than claimed. India transitioned from voluntary hallmarking to mandatory hallmarking in 2021, making it illegal for registered jewellers to sell un-hallmarked gold jewellery.

Components of BIS Hallmark

The current BIS hallmark (effective since July 2021) consists of three mandatory components stamped on every piece of gold jewellery: the BIS logo, the purity grade number, and the HUID.

1. BIS Logo (Triangular Mark)

The official Bureau of Indian Standards triangular logo confirms the piece has been tested and certified by a BIS-recognized assaying centre.

2. Purity/Fineness Grade

A 3-digit number indicating gold purity: 999 (24K/99.9%), 916 (22K/91.6%), 750 (18K/75%), or 585 (14K/58.3%).

3. HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification)

A 6-character alphanumeric code unique to each individual piece. This is the key identifier for online verification and traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BIS hallmark on gold jewellery?

BIS hallmark is an official purity certification issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a Government of India body. It guarantees that the gold jewellery meets the claimed purity standard (e.g., 916 for 22K gold). Since June 2021, hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India.

What does HUID mean on gold jewellery?

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification number. It is a 6-character alphanumeric code stamped on every hallmarked piece since July 2021. Each HUID is unique to a single item and can be verified online to confirm purity, jeweller details, and the assaying centre.

Is BIS hallmark mandatory in India?

Yes, as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts) Order 2020, BIS hallmarking has been mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India since June 2021. Jewellers must be BIS-registered and can only sell hallmarked gold.

How do I verify BIS hallmark online?

Visit the BIS website at bis.gov.in and go to the 'Verify HUID' section, or download the BIS Care app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Enter the 6-digit HUID number from your jewellery to get complete verification details.

What are the components of BIS hallmark?

The current BIS hallmark (since July 2021) has three components: (1) BIS logo (triangular), (2) Purity/Fineness grade (e.g., 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K), and (3) 6-digit alphanumeric HUID number. The older 4-component hallmark also had the Assaying Centre mark and jeweller mark.

Can fake BIS hallmark be detected?

Yes. Every genuine HUID is registered in the BIS database. If you enter a HUID number on the BIS website or app and it shows no result or mismatched details, the hallmark may be fraudulent. Always verify before purchasing.
